What is Reiki?

I completed my Level 1 Reiki attunement towards the end of last year, and since then it has completed transformed my life and the way I see the world. The fact that I have the ability to heal both myself and others simply from the touch of my hands still blows me away.

If you haven’t heard of reiki before, it is a healing technique based on the principle that the practitioner can channel energy through their hands. This activates the healing processes in the body to restore physical and emotional wellbeing.

There are four levels of attunement that you go through before you are able to teach others. The first level, which I have done allows me to heal myself and friends and family. Level 2, which I hope to complete as soon as possible, strengthens your abilities and allows you to perform distance healing and be able to become a fully insured practitioner. Level 3 is known as the ‘master’ level, which is when you are a more experienced reiki practitioner. Finally, once you have completed Level 4, you have reached a level where you can teach and attune others.

The Reiki Principles

Something that I learnt during my Level 1 training is the Reiki Principles, and they really stuck with me. They are similar to a mantra or affirmation that, as a reiki practitioner, you are recommended to live by and have at the forefront of your mind at all times.

What are the different types of reiki?

There are hundreds of different types of reiki therapy, but they all use energy as their main foundation. In the UK, the two most common types of reiki are Usui and Angelic. Usui is what I am attuned to, and it accounts to approximately 90% of all reiki practice. Usui reiki uses the energy that is all around us and present in every living thing, and is channeled through the practitioner. Angelic reiki is similar, however the energy comes from the angels, through the practitioner.

Can anyone become attuned?

It is possible for anyone to become attuned to reiki. It’s also important to point out that once you have been attuned, the ability is with you for life. Some people don’t use their reiki abilities for decades, but they are still able to return to it if they require. Although anyone can be attuned, I believe to be successful, you should already be in tune with your intuition and psychic abilities. You should also always have the drive to want to help people heal, both emotionally and physically.

What are the benefits of having reiki treatment?

  • Stress relief
  • Pain relief
  • Rebalancing of chakras
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Boosts energy levels
  • Promotes personal awareness
  • Enhances spritual connection

What does reiki energy feel like?

People receive reiki energy in many different ways. If you haven’t had reiki before, you can feel nervous of the unknown. You may feel warmth, coolness, tingling, a magnetic type pull or you may not feel anything at all. The reiki energy will always be sent to where it’s needed. For example, if you have a painful knee, you should be able to feel the energy make its way to that area. If you are the type of person that doesn’t physically feel the energy, please be assured that it is still doing its job. After reiki treatment, you may feel slightly drained, tired, and your troubled areas may even feel worse for a couple of days. This is all part of the healing process.
