Being your own boss has many ups and downs no matter how big a part of your life it is.
Earning a lot of money, building a following, getting sponsorship deals or TV opportunities are just a few perks of reaching the upper echelon of the entrepreneurial world. At the heart of being your own boss though is seizing control of your destiny, and ideally, your time and finances as well.
Whatever your ultimate goals, there’s one major factor that’ll impact your success or failure in this space: noise.
What is Noise?
If you look up the definition of noise you’ll find the most basic meaning is a confused or loud outcry.
If you are wondering how this pertains to entrepreneurship let me break it down for you. There are many forms of noise in this space:
- Family, friends, or anyone who is close to you: Even though you may have a very close circle of people you respect and that love you they may be holding you back from the dream business you want to build.
- People on social media: There are many naysayers on social media who may just send negativity your way for no apparent reason just to pull you down.
- Social Media Reaction: Social media has many forms of reaction whether it be good or bad. You may see this type of reaction to certain pieces of content and it may hold you back from publishing a piece you’re very passionate about.
How To Deal With It
Trying to figure out how to react to this type of ‘noise’ can seem very daunting and potentially a major detriment. Being able to get past this noise is more important than I can possibly describe in this post.
You may feel like you’re being completely overwhelmed and swamped by the noise you’re facing in your daily life. The walls could feel like they’re collapsing. The door is locked and the key has gone missing. But I’m here to tell you there is a way out.
Using this method may be difficult. It may be hard emotionally depending on where the noise is coming from. It could cause you to overthink things but I’m telling you it’s worth it.
What’s this magical, all powerful advice I have to offer? The answer is simple: Ignore the noise.
Ignore the noise. Sorry best friend that’s criticizing you. Sorry family member that doesn’t believe you can do it. Sorry social media naysayers that spread Ill will.
Think to yourself ‘I’m sorry to whoever this may be but I’m not going to let you hold me back’. Thinking like this doesn’t mean you have to disrespect your loved ones or people you hold near to you. It means that you have to follow your path and not let anyone or anything stop you.
Ignoring the noise in this fashion can produce greater results for you and potentially have the ones close to you respect you more even if they had disagreed with you before.
Remember, going down the path of being your own boss is a very tough journey but also extremely rewarding. Running a business can bring many positive things into your life but to be successful at it you have to remember to ignore the noise.
