The elements of Life – and how they can help you become a better version of yourself

Earth, water, fire and wind. When there is energy there is life.

-Suze Kassem

The physical elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water, can teach you more about life than you can imagine. Earth, Air, Fire and Water have certain characteristics which will help you understand the importance of life and how you can become a better version of yourself. Walking and enjoying the beauty on Earth, sitting on the balcony with the Air cooling you, the Fire that helps you cook your food and the Water that you enjoy swimming in are all moments you will enjoy in your journey called life. These four elements, when put together, form the planet we live on today and also offer lessons which will help you succeed.

The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.

-Chief Joseph

Earth is the element of stability and groundedness which signifies humility and humbleness. Successful leaders avoid getting cocky and do not forget their origins; where it all began. This element shows it is important to respect everyone from all stages of life, from your parents to the passenger sitting near you on the bus. The feeling one gets from enjoying natural beauty is memorable, and so is life when someone gives you far more respect than you expect.

Spending time with family, friends and doing community service will help you stay grounded. This will show up in your steady and confident persona.

Who can tell the mind of the Wind? Who can catch it and hold it in their hand? Who can tell where the wind has been blowing? And who among the wise can foretell where it will go?

-Elven Saying

Air is the element of intelligence and creativity. There is no end to the form of air and it can’t be seen – but its influence can be clearly felt, similar to intelligence. The representation of air is what we cannot see, which is the thoughts within the mind, the focus of intent and unhindered vision. The element of Air shows that it is important to keep learning, whichever stage of life you are at, similar to the vital winds that brought the universe into being.

Visualization is a vital technique in succeeding in life, and Air aids us in this creativity. Picturing happy events and imagining holding what you want will keep you inspired and fuel your inner creativeness to make your visualizations come true.

Success isn’t a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.

-Arnold H. Glasow

Fire is the element associated with determination and will power. Fire represents passion and motivation to succeed in our goals. In Greek philosophy, Fire was as important as it is in today’s world – so much so that a hero named Prometheus stole it from the sun so humankind can survive!

Reading motivating content and having a role model who keeps inspiring you will keep the fire burning. Find out what keeps the fire alive in you! Just as a fire needs to be controlled in daily life, the fire within yourself needs to be controlled. Note that if determination and will power reach uncontrollable levels it can lead to anger which has dangerous consequences. Ignite the fire within yourself, but control it!

You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.

-Bruce Lee

Water represents diversity, which leads to freedom and the creation of new ideas. It is formless, and this is how you should blend into your surroundings. Just like in life, if left standing still for too long, water will become stagnant. Hence it is a symbol of continuous movement,  like the fast-flowing river streams and the waves that crash.

A great way of achieving formlessness is to work on letting go of a certain amount of your identity so that you can adapt yourself in any new situations. In other words, sometimes you have to ‘go with the flow’ to become comfortable in a situation, to maintain a stress-free life.

When you look around you are surrounded by elements which give you lessons in life. Water gives birth to new ideas, fire lights up these ideas into action, with continuous knowledge, like air, you will grow, and staying grounded to earth is how your journey to success will become a reality.

Remember Earth heals us, Air moves us, Fire transforms us and Water shapes us.
