Bread in Captivity

Children screaming happy screams,
enacting dreams,
my sons enjoy the sun outside.
Upstairs, sunlight
cuts through blinds – blind to what’s
happening in the world.

The sourdough starter slowly rises with the sun,
but the real work is not yet done –
it’s yet to become our daily bread –
that’s when the magic truly happens.

For now, I sit here bathed in sun,
in the soft comfort of my bed –
now my office, (once my love nest)
not the best, but like the rest of things,
life is different now.
For now, we must change and adapt –
and that’s the secret of living well.

The aftertaste of my morning coffee
(coffee house brew, if it matters to you)
lingers in my mouth,
reminding me of how
beautiful such days can be.

I feel calm, at rest, at my best.
I’m enjoying this time for me,
time to simply be –

Who knew that captivity
could set you free?
