We all suffer from low levels of motivation and productivity from time to time. The emotional and physical challenges we have all been facing, especially in the past year has definitely brought out more discussion on the topic of keeping motivated and productive when the majority of us are stuck at home.
A lot of these discussions are based around the same advice; getting more sleep, keeping active, making to-do lists and sticking to a routine. However, not much has been said about being careful of your diet. We all know a balanced diet is needed for our physical wellbeing and we should be getting our 5-a-day, but do you know that there are some foods and drinks that can actually help boost your levels of motivation and productivity?
Fatty fishes, especially salmon, contain high levels of Omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 has been found to increase productivity levels as it can improve memory, mental performance and even help fight depression – all things that lead to a decreased level of motivation. If you don’t like salmon, taking a fish oil supplement can achieve similar results.
Berries contain high levels of anti-oxidants, with darker berries such as cranberries, blackberries and blueberries containing the most. It’s these anti-oxidants that work to improve memory function, both now and also preventing diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s in the future.
Love it or hate it – green tea is considered to be one of the healthiest drinks you can get. It provides levels of caffeine similar to coffee but without the negative side effects as it is released into the body at a slower rate. There are so many different flavours of green tea available now, if you haven’t found one you like yet, try a nice fruity flavour with a drop of honey to combat the bitter taste. You can also add a slice of lemon or lime for a flavour boost – and get a little vitamin kick at the same time.

It contains magnesium which is a natural stress reliever – something that often impacts our levels of motivation. It also has levels of caffeine, which can help you feel more energetic and focussed on a task.
All nuts contain fantastic properties for increasing your brainpower, but almonds and walnuts stand out from the rest. Nuts are rich in Vitamin E, antioxidants and amino acids – all things our body and brain craves to be able to keep going throughout the day. Nuts are a fantastic choice for a healthy mid-afternoon snack.
Your body gets its energy levels from sugar, and bananas contain a fantastic level of all-natural sugar. A single banana holds your recommended daily intake to keep your energy levels nice and high throughout the day. One of the main reasons we start to feel unmotivated is due to low levels of energy. Bananas are a great snack option for in between meals as they are filling too.
Eggs make a fantastic breakfast option due to their levels of Vitamin B. It’s this vitamin that works to stimulate the brain’s reactive sensors, making it easier for you to concentrate and feel driven to carry out tasks. Eggs can also improve memory and speed up reaction time – all factors that we need, especially at work. If your budget allows, try to buy organic local eggs or at least free range eggs.
Brown rice is packed with vitamins that your body craves, including magnesium which relieves stress and accelerates productivity. By making the simple switch from white rice to brown rice, you may start to feel much more energised. It also helps to keep you fuller for longer, similar to all wholegrain foods.
It may seem obvious, but drinking plenty of water should be something that you actively make sure you do every single day. Our bodies (and brains!) need water to be able to function correctly. Dehydration on any level can be very dangerous to both our physical and mental health. You should be aiming for at least 2 litres (or 8 small glasses) of water each day.
Tap water is completely fine, although you may wish to boil and filter it for greater purity.
