A beginner’s guide to crystals

Crystals are becoming a trending topic of conversation recently, with more and more market stalls and shops popping up selling a whole range of crystals. Recent years have seen an upward spike in the amount of holistic and spiritual interest people have, and crystals are a nice step into the whole spectrum of healing. In this article we will discuss what crystals are, what they can be used for and how you should go about choosing the right crystals for you.

What are crystals?

Crystals are naturally formed minerals, usually found underground. Their appearance depends on the characteristics of its type and the conditions of which it has been growing in. There are hundreds of different types of crystals and each and every one is unique in colour, size, shape and characteristic. They have very special and unique healing energy properties.

Different crystals have different energy

Each different type of crystal has a different type of healing energy and is best used for certain things. Crystals can be used for all sorts of healing including reducing depression, improving sleep, channelling positive energy, clearing out old or negative energy and even can attract love. For example, Tigers Eye is best used to seek clarity, whereas Rose Quartz is associated with unconditional love. The use of a crystal is mostly determined by the energy that it carries. By using your intuition, you will be able to feel the energy that a crystal gives off and with practice, will know its properties and characteristics.

What shapes do crystals come in?

The shape of a crystal affects its energy and how it emits it. The most common crystal shapes are:

Single terminated wands
These have a single point at one end and a rough or rounded edge at the other. They are used widely in healing and cleansing as the pointed edge directs the energy in a specific direction.

Clusters
Clusters consist of a group of small crystals that have naturally grown joined together. Clusters can be excellent for enriching and cleansing an atmosphere.

Chunks
Chunks are crystals without notable facets. They can be good for enriching a room’s atmosphere, for holding during meditation or simply carrying in your pocket.

Cut crystals
Cut crystals are crystals that have been cut and polished into shapes such as pyramids, wands or spheres, which can make them very attractive. If they are well-cut the energy of the stone can be maintained and sometimes amplified.

Tumblestones
Tumblestones are small stones, rocks or crystals that have been tumbled over each other many times with increasingly finer abrasive until the sides become smooth and shiny. Many people like to carry a crystal tumblestone around in their pocket to keep the energy of the stone with them throughout the day.

How to choose the right crystal for you

The best way to choose the right crystal for you relies heavily on your intuition. If you are drawn to a crystal, buy it. A lot of crystal shops have ‘meanings’ written next to each type of crystal – try not to get hung up on these meanings. For example, it may say a crystal will aid sleep, but your sleep may be fine already. This might put you off your own intuition but it is really important to listen to it. Hold the crystal in your hand and really tune in to the energy it gives off. You will be able to feel it.
